Tagging SEO vs Social Bookmarking SEO
First of all, what's this tagging business all about? Like RSS and podcasting, tagging is a buzzword.
Idea of tagging
- For anyone working as part of a group engaged on any kind of research, tagging allows online reference materials to be shared between group members.
- Tagging could be better than bookmarking if the person uses more than one PC. With tagging, they can get the same list of their favourite sites in one of locations.
- A person who finds a useful page on a particular topic is willing to recommend it to the wider world by tagging it.
Tagging sites
There are tagging sites del.icio.us furl.net sitetagger.com (out of business 2011), blinklist.com connectedy.com (out of business 2011), technorati.com, bibsonomy.org, mylinkvault.com, a1-webmarks.com, backflip.com (out of business 2011), url.org jumptags.com mister-wong.com. These are sites which make it possible for users to 'tag' any web page. They are like online libraries for the web, and their members are an army of voluntary librarians, classifying the Internet as they go.
Is there any SEO benefit from tagging?
- A backlink, with the user name in anchor text.
- An SE could use tags as an extra contributing factor in their algorithm. If for example, a user entered a search term of 'cars', the SE could look for sites that have been tagged the highest number of times with the tag of 'cars', rather than looking exclusively at backlinks with anchor text of 'cars'. Since a tagging site user can only tag a site with a particular tag once, it would make spamming search engines that bit more difficult.
